Risk and poverty in a changing climate : Invest today for a safer tomorrow
Development efforts are increasingly at risk. A faltering global economy, food and energy insecurity, conflict, global climate change, declining ecosystems, extreme poverty and the threat of pandemics are amongst the factors challenging progress towards improving social welfare and economic stability in many developing countries. As a series of catastrophes in 2008 yet again reminded us, disaster risks associated with hazards such as tropical cyclones, floods, earthquakes, droughts and other natural hazards from a critical part of this interlocking constellation of threats and constitute a critical challenge to development.
